New York Times Editorial: "Fix the Road Home!"
New York Times calls on State to resolve GNOFHAC’s Road Home lawsuit.
From the Greater New Orleans Fair Housing Action Center’s website:
Yesterday, the New York Times published an editorial encouraging the State of Louisiana to resolve our lawsuit over the discriminatory Road Home program. The Times believes and we agree that a large percentage of Katrina damaged housing remains blighted because of the Road Home program’s failure to make adequate grant awards in minority census tracts.

“Detroit is the only city in the United States that rivals New Orleans’ 53,000 abandoned and blighted addresses. The difference between us and Detroit is that we had an $11 billion program that was supposed to help homeowners repair their blighted homes. But an inherent flaw in the program design is leaving thousands of New Orleans homeowners homeless. The New York Times editorial says it best: “the state must find a way to help these people now.”
We agree! And I’d add that fixing blight in New Orleans and ensuring an equitable rebuilding will also require aggressive action by HUD. HUD and the State must partner to fix the Road Home program to ensure that all homeowners receive grants based on the cost of repair to their homes.
Call Secretary Shaun Donovan at secretary.donovan@hud.gov or call him at (202) 708-0417 today! Tell him to fix the Road Home program today!
