“We live in a world of Katrinas”—Desmond Tutu.
Today marks the eighth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, and depending on where you stand, the shadow of this unprecedented disaster continues to loom large in New Orleans and beyond. As always, this is a time for reflection on how far we’ve come and how far we’ve yet to go.
As New Orleans reflects on Katrina, our sisters and brothers up North are bracing for the upcoming one-year anniversary of Superstorm Sandy. We teamed up with our partners, Sandy Storyline to highlight stories of residents struggling to rebuild their homes after Katrina and Sandy. From one disaster to the other, what-if anything-have we learned?
The article is the second of a series exploring the stories of people across New York City and New Jersey that are “In Between Homes” in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.
The piece features the story of Land of Opportunity protagonist Al Aubrey, chronicling his struggle to return to and rebuild his home in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and convoluted FEMA imperatives.
