Joe Allen

Joe Allen, aka “Mardi Gras Indian Joe”, is a life-long New Orleanian who currently lives in the 7th ward neighborhood. Joe is an elder in the Mardi Gras Indian community, which is a small but well-known and well-respected piece of New Orleans culture. Joe notes that while he was displaced to Texas it was nearly impossible to continue to find materials and supplies to fashion his suits—which can often take years to complete. Once he finished construction on his home in 2007, he turned his focus back to passing on the tradition to youth, so that the lineage of his crew doesn’t end.

Joe Allen sadly passed on April 21st, 2012.
