Donald Collins, a life-long New Orleanian from the 9th ward, was knocked off his feet by the storm. Formerly employed as a garbage truck driver, he is homeless for the first time in his life in 2007. Land of Opportunity follows Donald from the Duncan Plaza tent city in 2007 as he tries to get a license to be a commercial truck driver and “get back right” to his former life. We see him as he moves in and out of temporary shelters and hotels, works with his caseworker and faces the obstacles and frustrations of homelessness for the first time in his life. After much hard work, Donald passes his CDL exam and moves into an apartment – bringing his life back to some degree of normalcy for the first time in over two years.
