From Katrina to Sandy

LandofOpportunity and Sandy Storyline are proud to announce a new creative partnership and ongoing collaboration. LandofOpportunity is a collaborative storytelling site that features layered multimedia narratives about (re)building urban America through the lens of post-Katrina New Orleans. Sandy Storyline, similarly, is a participatory documentary that collects and shares stories about the impact of Hurricane Sandy on neighborhoods, communities and lives.

Our partnership began in the fall of 2013 in the wake of the devastation wrought by Hurricane Sandy. Sandy Storyline is a participatory documentary that collects and shares stories about the impact of Hurricane Sandy on neighborhoods, communities and lives. By engaging people in sharing their own experiences and visions, Sandy Storyline, much like LandofOpportunity, is building a community-generated narrative of the storm and its aftermath—a narrative that seeks to build a more just and sustainable future.

This collaboration will be an ongoing exploration of the time-space continuum of disaster recovery and rebuilding in an urban setting, a look at the then-and-now, New Orleans-New York dynamic of reconstruction. How does one set of narratives overlap with the other? What-if anything-have we learned from the ongoing and contentious rebirth of New Orleans? How can those lessons be used to predict, and more importantly change what happens on the ground post-Sandy?

A major goal of the LandofOpportunity story space is to collaborate with strategic partners in sister cities, including mediamakers, educators and advocates, who are working on fundamental issues of urban equity in their own communities. The diverse and engaging stories we create and curate with Sandy Storyline will bring home the timely message that this is "happening to a city near you".

This video is our first collaboration and announcement of this ongoing relationship.
